Go on, get on down to Gendon! Gen Don Chinese Restaurant

This is a little gem of a restaurant in the heart of Kota Damansara that you can’t go wrong with.

Gendon specializes in the usual Chinese roasted meats – chicken, duck, siu yuk (roasted pork belly) and char siu (barbecue pork) but there are plenty of other dishes on the menu too.

The meats themselves are generally of a slightly higher quality, yet no more expensive, that what you typically find at the Chinese food courts. Plus you have air conditioning as a bonus!

It is likely that the reason Gendon is able to provide this quality at no extra charge is due to the (presumably) lower overhead costs associated with being located in the high-street as opposed to the mall.

You will also notice that despite the comfortable interior, clean bathrooms and free wifi, there is not even any service charge added to your bill. What a pleasant surprise!

It’s difficult to walk past the window without being tempted inside, as the succulent roasted meats dangle seductively in full view of passers by, and this is indeed what happened to us the first time we ate here.

Let’s have a look at the menu. It’s a kind of dimsum-style set up where you tick off what you want from the list they give you, and the quantity of each.

Our favorite of all has to be the siu yuk (roasted pork belly). I don’t think there has been an occasion so far on which we have not ordered this, and it’s always the first item we tick off when we come here. The pork belly is thickly cut, with a crispy crunchy skin, and just the right amount of soft fat under the skin.

We prefer our pork belly to be as lean as possible, so the first time we tried it we asked the waitress to choose the leanest part for us. “No fat?”, she asked. “Right, no too much fat please!”, we requested. “Ok, no fat!”.

Bryn was slightly concerned that the pork would literally contain no fat at all and end up dry, but I assured him that was impossible for pork belly, and sure enough it turned out just right.

Since then, we always request ”no fat” (of course in reality there is still plenty of fat, as the belly is a fatty cut by definition).

The “no fat” request simply ensures that it doesn’t arrive too fatty.

Next, we typically order a portion of either chicken or duck, which normally comes with rice. For the chicken I recommend Hainanese style boneless chicken breast; we like to specify “boneless” here, otherwise we have found you run the risk of getting a lot of bone and not much meat.

The perfect accompaniment to the meats is a plate of mung bean sprouts, as well as the delicious suan cai (pickled mustard greens).

Although the siu yuk is not greasy at all, it is nevertheless nice to pair the
meat with the refreshing taste of something, not meaty.

Also be sure to help yourself to as much free
pickled chilli and sweet red chilli sauce as you like!

You will find this in the little silver jars in the corner of each table. Warning: the pickles are addictive – I am easily able to finish the whole pot.

Meanwhile my son Berry knows exactly what he wants when he comes to Gendon.

Wantan Mee (wonton noodles) with char siu (barbecue pork) of course!

As is always the case with wantan mee, you
can choose whether to have your noodles in soup form, mixed in with the wonton dumplings, or on a
separate plate, in which case your noodles will arrive tossed in a delicious slightly-sweet dark brown sauce.

We don’t need to ask Berry which he prefers – the brown sauce version of course! On the side of
your plate you get a serving of delicious tender char siu which even Bryn liked despite the barbecue sauce!

If you’d rather your noodles without the barbecue pork that’s fine, but the extra pork will only
set you back an additional rm3 so it’s pretty much a no-brainer, and as soon as we discovered this, naturally we upgraded.

So there you have it; Roast pork, chicken rice, wantan mee with barbecue pork, bean sprouts and suan cai. A nice big satisfying lunch for the three of us for only RM50(US$12).

And to top it all off the staff are lovely
and always take time to smile and say hello to Berry, who unsurprisingly is rather popular here; well, in fact Berry seems to be rather popular wherever he goes!

If you want to taste authentic Chinese cuisine like home-cooked quality at an affordable price, this is the right place for you.
