Best Sarawak Restaurant Lin Li Xiang ??? Petaling Jaya

Malaysia is made up of 13 states, including East Malaysia located on Borneo Island and West Malaysia on the Peninsula bordering Thailand. In addition to Malaysia, Borneo Island includes Brunei, Indonesia. In Borneo, Brunei is located in the middle, with Malaysian Sabah state on the right and Malaysian Sarawak state on the left. Below that, Indonesia occupies a very large territory.

In Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, which belongs to West Malaysia, and Petaling Jaya, the district where I live, it is impressive that people from all over Malaysia, as well as people from many different countries, live in a very complex, yet miraculously harmonious environment.

There are a few things I feel after living in this bustling and busy Petaling Jaya area for 3 years. Going to several nearby shopping malls, looking out of the window at trendy and pretty shops and restaurants, or having coffee while talking with local people, and casually just looking at the people on the street or inside malls, I experience how the day goes by so fast.

So, once I decide to go out, I really need to pack a camera along with my mobile and plenty of batteries. Because I don’t know what kind of food scenes, and people I’ll be encountering to record.

So, when a local friend takes me and said there is a restaurant she wanted to introduce, I prepares everything without forgetting my camera and enough battery. So my heart flies high towards this Sarawak restaurant “Lin Li Xiang ???”.

Even though it has been open for less than two years in Petaling Jaya, the restaurant is known for serving authentic Sarawak food at a reasonable price along with coffee grown in Sarawak. To be honest, I am so grateful that I got to know this place thanks to “Lee Lee(Lily)”, a native Malay Chinese from Sarawak.

The name of the restaurant “Lin Li Xiang ???”, when interpreted literally, has a beautiful name with a poetic melody of “scent from the forest” and a very refreshing and soothing feeling.

What a peaceful and lovely name for a restaurant with a pretty pronunciation!

Before that, my Chinese friend “Lee Lee” introduced me to another Sarawak restaurant first, called “SALTed” that is close to my house and tried some typical Sarawak food. I’ve tried their halal Sarawak Laksa, Sarawak Me, and Sarawak Kolo Mee, but this doesn’t live up to my expectations.

So, a few days later, “Lee Lee” told me that if I go to visit “Lin Li Xiang”, I would taste really good Sarawak food, so I gladly followed her suggestion. When I arrived at the restaurant around 11 am, it was already full of customers.

First of all, the pretty signboard of the restaurant is so welcoming and lovely. And I immediately noticed that on the table to the left of the entrance, there are some delicious looking traditional Chinese desserts made by Shally’s mother, the young and pretty lady of the restaurant.

The colorful colors of the oriental sweets are so pretty and super fresh. Next to the bite-sized dessert, mung bean porridge and red bean porridge, commonly eaten in Korea and China, are stacked and sold in containers. Desserts change daily, so you can try a different item every day.

And to the right of the entrance is the Sarawak coffee station, which is made and sold by the restaurant. The aroma of coffee from the coffee beans stimulates the nose and makes the guests who enter the entrance feel more hungry.

Their signature dishes of this Sarawak restaurant are tomato mee(noodles) and sarawak laksa, which is similar to coconut cream based curry mee. Since this place sells mostly pork meat, followed by seafood and chicken meat, it is definitely not a halal restaurant.

Some of the Sarawak restaurants I’ve been to before, and there are quite a few that sell halal versions as mentioned above.

When ordering the Sarawak tomato mee, you can choose the wide and silky kuey tiaw noodles made from rice, or you can choose something similar to the crispy and curly ramen shown in the photo.

Since the ramen is poured over a sweet and sour starchy sauce made with a a little spicy and peppery tomato sauce, tomato mee crispy ramen is cooked slowly as you eat it. And the toppings are typical sliced red sauced coated char siu pork, pork liver, shrimp, pork balls, fish balls and chopped onions.

The tomato mee portion is quite big, and at a glance, it looks like two servings for those who have normal stomach capacity. There are special and normal size on the menu, and the special size is about RM12.90, and all the ingredients mentioned are included.

Next, speaking of Sarawak food, Sarawak Laksa, famous for Sarawak Curry, cannot be missed. The curry broth is really deep and flavorful with a thick coconut milk base.

Sarawak Laksa is amazingly delicious with all kinds of spices and especially coconut broth with coriander and cumin powder. I can confidently say that this is the best curry laksa I have ever eaten in Malaysia.

In addition, the flavor of Sarawak pepper grown in Sarawak is strong but deliciously stimulates the nose. Laksa is topped with pork char siu, fried wantan, shredded chicken, shrimp and fried egg omelette as a garnish. Also served with one green lemon on top. Before eating the laksa noodles, squeeze the lemon juice and mix it with the laksa broth for a more fragrant taste.

Indeed, the laksa bowl looks really huge and generous in portion. The good thing is that the price is RM12.9 for the large size, which is the same as the special size for Sarawak tomato mee.

The bad thing is that it’s more difficult to choose which one to eat. ????

The next thing to try here is the Sarawak-style dumplings. There are a soup version and a dry version. It’s called “Kiaw” in Sarawak, and the dumplings are freshly made at the restaurant, so it’s really juicy and fresh and the dumpling skin is really thin. It contains ground pork and has a really good taste that melts in your mouth.

Another delicious dish is organ soup made from pork intestines. Organ soup is made by boiling for a long time. The broth is flavored with aromas of Sarawak black pepper, chopped green onion and coriander leaves to enhance flavor and appetite while eating. The chili sauce that comes with it is also delicious, and since the red pepper is pickled in vinegar, it is good to eat it with pork intestines.

Lastly, don’t forget the Sarawak coffee. Restaurant owner Shelly says Sarawak coffee is the best, she confidently says, and you can see why.

Instead of adding any sugars, I only drank Sarawak black coffee, the flavor of the coffee is completely different from the coffee I get at Mamak’s Kafe kosong(black coffee), and it’s completely different from the standard coffee taste of the Starbucks Coffee. It has a nice tart taste and a deep chocolate flavor that will delight your palate.

Homemade Asian sweet kuehs served with Sarawak coffee for dessert are a must, so don’t forget to try them. The limited quantity is always sold out by 11 am already. So, when ordering the main laksa, tomato mee, dumplings, or pork organ soup etc, it is better to order the dessert in advance.
Here, Lin Li Xiang opens at 9am and closes around 3pm when all the food is sold out. And, it is closed on Mondays.

Additionally, during the Covid period, all food items will be delivered to your home through the delivery app either Grab Food or Food Panda. So you can enjoy the delicious and authentic Sarawak laksa, curry and dumplings and even the sweet and savory kuehs.

Also, they frequently do some promo events, so there may be items that are cheaper if delivered. Call or check out the promo items directly on the restaurant’s website or social media channel. And Sarawak Black Pepper is also available separately at this restaurant.

Last but not least, another thing I would like to introduce is the Sarawak Shrimp Crackers brought directly from Sarawak.

These crackers are freshly fried and sold, and they are really delicious when eaten with fresh vegetable pickles called acha, which are made at the restaurant.

The biggest, crispy, freshest shrimp crackers I’ve ever had, really tasty and impressive in size.
