Amazing Chinese Siew Yoke And Char siu at Nanyang Chicken Rice

It’s surprising that half a year has passed since the day I had my busiest and most fulfilling day in early January 2021. This story is about volunteering to help local seniors very early in the morning, and the same morning after that charity activity, a delicious local Chinese food shared with locals who volunteered for the charity.

In early January 2021, at the suggestion of my local friend Ricky, I went to do charity work at a local morning market(Malay: Pasar Pagi) in Taman Melati, Wangsa maju, Kuala Lumpur. The charity event was hosted by Wangsa Maju Division Chairman Mr Ng How Doo.


The Sunday morning market, held once a week, is a place where seniors usually go to buy fresh and inexpensive agricultural and marine products. Since the market is not a permanent market, vendors put up banners in the alleyways and put their items on display on tables. Since it is an area where many Malaysians live, most of it is Malay food.

So, among the freshly cook food, there are Nasi lemak and lots of fried small bites along with various local foods such as nasi campur, nasi krabu, nasi dagang, and nasi goreng and mee etc. Delicious traditional desserts and biscuits, lots of fresh vegetables, tropical fruits, meat and fish are also available.

Wangsa Maju area is quite far from Petaling Jaya where I live. I have to cross Kuala Lumpur diagonally, which takes about 30 minutes by car, even when there is no traffic. My local friend Ricky came to pick me up at 7 in the morning when it was still dark in my condo.

Along the way, we went to pick up Ricky’s friend Peter from Kuala Lumpur Central Station. So I checked the time when I arrived at Taman Melati Morning Market, Wangsa maju District, north of Kuala Lumpur, and the sun was already rising around 8pm.

The place where we volunteered was a local Malay restaurant at the beginning of a market alley. When we arrived all tables were removed from the inside and completely empty, instead two large, long tables were placed side by side. And there are hundreds of nasi lemak, the Malaysian national food stacked neatly on the table.

It had been raining since dawn and continued to fall throughout the Charity event. So it wasn’t the muggy weather, but it was cool in the morning and I woke up from sleep. But it would have been better if the weather was sunny for such a charity work! Because of raining, it seemed that the participation of the elderly was less than expected.

At the charity campaign activity, we did help the elderly, unlike supermarkets, items sold in a market street do not have a fixed price. Raising or lowering prices because of no price tag attached can make it hard for older people to buy.

So, it is important to hear suggestions and feedback on the difficulties of purchasing goods in the market experienced by the local elderly. This is because in the future, politicians in the district, some angels who want to help the local community, or various economic supporters can find ways to help.


After writing down their contact information and names on paper from the surveyed elderly and receiving their comments, we handed out plastic bags of Malaysian national food “Nasi Lemak”, mineral water and disposable masks to them. So what I helped was to put the already prepared nasi lemak, water, and a mask in a bag and hand it out to the elderly. It is not difficult doing about 100 or more pieces. Rather, it was a pleasant time to wake up from sleep in the morning, listen to the sound of rain, and talk with the locals.

And around noon, I was given the chance to draw one ticket during the lucky draw, the final stage of the volunteer work, and it was nice to be able to provide items with a variety of groceries needed for some elderly people.

So the first day of my new year 2021 started with a meaningful and fruitful day. I am grateful to my local friends, Ricky and Mr. Ng, for giving me such a precious and memorable charity opportunity.

For me, it’s not an ordinary rainy Sunday morning, it’s a really warm, smiling happy day.

After finishing the charity work and cleaning up the Malay restaurant that had provided a place, I looked at the time and it was already past 12 noon for lunch.

Suggested by Mr. Ng and others, we decided to go to a local Chinese restaurant, which can be reached in about 10 minutes by car, and had lunch together.

This is a very Chinese style restaurant called Nanyang Chicken Rice. They sell pork and chicken as main ingredients. So, it’s clearly not halal food.

When we reached there, it was so crowded that customers were waiting in line at the entrance.

Fortunately, the turnover was also fast, so after waiting a bit, we were presented to a table. Since there were more than 10 of us in total, we were divided into two tables and sat down. I was seated at the same table with Mr. Ng and Ricky and his friend Peter.

In fact, the name of the restaurant itself is Nanyang chicken rice, but there are many different types of pork dishes sold.

When you look at Chinese-style pork menu items, you usually have pork belly, a char siu meat coated in honey glazed barbecue red sauce, and crispy and fried siew yoke which are two most famous ones.

Some people prefer the char siu(?? soft pork belly meat, pinyin: ch?sh?o; Cantonese Yale: ch?s?u) in sweet honey glazed bbq sauce. Others like more the crunchy texture of the cracking sound of the Siw Yuk.

It is hard to choose one over the other. Indeed I like both, but if I had to choose one, I would choose Siew yoke because I like the crunchy sound of the deep fried and roasted pork skin outside.

Luckily, we ordered pretty much all most all items available in the restaurant including char siu, siew yoke(?? pinyin: sh?o ròu; Cantonese Yale: s?u yuhk; lit. ‘roast meat’), hainanese style steamed chicken, freshly stir fried bean sprouts, pork balls, dumplings, white rice and wan tan noodles.

So I didn’t have to eat only crunchy siw yuk, but it was nice to be able to try a variety of dishes and I was very satisfied with the amazing taste of each dish.

The Chinese owner was really friendly and very welcoming despite being busy preparing, cutting and plating all the meat himself. Each dish was introduced one by one. He came to our table and proudly explained his food in smiles.

Especially since I’m Korean, he asked me what was the most delicious food I had here. Of course, I undeniably told him that all the food in his restaurant was delicious. It was so true in fact.

And to explain the other dishes, one of the vegetable dishes you need to order for when you go to a chicken rice restaurant is bean sprouts. It is so appetizing and cooked quickly over high heat, so the fresh and crunchy taste of bean sprouts is kept so well. In particular, the taste of the homemade soy sauce is really good, and it is perfect to eat with various meats.

Also, homemade dumplings called wonton dumplings come in clear meat broth and are good to eat with chicken rice. Of course, you can’t leave out wonton mee (wonton noodles), which are the noodles that are tangy, elastic, and chewy. It is easily wrapped around chopsticks, so no matter how big the noodle portion is, you can eat it all in a few bites.

Last not least, the homemade style green chili pickles served at the restaurant, pickled in vinegar, are really delicious.

And after an amazing Chinese lunch, I had a black coffee called “Kopi Kosong”, the local style traditional black coffee, which is a must. Even though I was very full, I could not forget the flavor of the savory, fragrant and strong local coffee.

It may have been a tiring day for waking up early in the morning, but thanks to the strong coffee, I was able to spend a day full of meaningful and beautiful memories.
