A Trio of Indian delights in Cyberjaya Malaysia

Who doesn’t love Indian food?

In Cyberjaya we were spoiled for choice but there are three places we’ll never forget. As with the Arabic restaurants, all three are inexpensive and as good as anything you’ll find in KL in terms of quality.

We kept going back to these over and over as they each offered something unique. Well, it made us go back!

1. Punjabi Junction

This was the nearest of our favorite three to where we were staying, and the least well-known, possibly due to its slightly less favorable location on the back side of the main shopping mall.

You won’t find this one in the guide books! Bryn used to joke that Punjabi Junction was the most authentic because none of the staff could speak a word of English. “It must be real Indian food. They can’t even understand me!”

I’m not sure that that logic is necessarily watertight, but I must admit it did remind me of being in India.

Bryn and Berry would sometimes sneak off here for a cheeky boys dinner without asking me first.

The interior of the place isn’t particularly attractive but it didn’t matter as the food more than made up for that.

If anything it only added to its authenticity! Between us we tried out quite a chunk of the menu the first few times we ate here, but once we were familiar with most of the dishes we quickly settled on a few dishes that we really liked.

The palak paneer is made by blending fresh spinach with cream (and probably plenty of oil but hey, it tastes good).

They get their paneer shipped in straight from India. We always order a few chapatis to dip in. My beloved chana(chickpeas).

The lamb is a bit of an unknown quantity at Punjabi Junction. It can range from “just ok” to “amazing”. The first time we ordered a lamb (mutton) dish we couldn’t believe how tender it was, and more importantly (hehe) how much of it turned up! To call it generous would be an understatement.

I distinctly remember thinking we should come back twice a week and order at least one lamb dish every time. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the exception rather the rule, as on every other occasion we were served what I would describe as a normal portion, and not quite as succulent as that first lamb experience. This is not a criticism – it was always very nice and we were never dissatisfied.

2. Jaipur Mahal

Like Punjabi Junction, Jaipur Mahal mostly serves up North Indian cuisine but unlike Punjabi Junction everyone has heard of this is restaurant, and yes the waiters do speak English!

In fact it is so popular that coaches full of Indian tourists would regularly stop here for their lunch before continuing with their sight-seeing.

There is also a KL branch in Sentul. Jaipur Mahal has a bit more of an up-market feel to it, yet is only slightly more costly (still relatively inexpensive).

Funnily enough “mahal” means “expensive” in Malay but don’t worry – it isn’t. We tend to order at least one biryani between us when we come here.

Yes you can find biriyani almost anywhere these days, but Jaipur Mahal’s biriyani is particularly good.

The coconut chutney that it comes with is amazing. The Dal Makhani (red beans and cream) reminded us of a place in Delhi where we first tried this dish and got so addicted to it that we had it every day for a few weeks!

Look at all the traditional snacks for sale! After your meal – or in Berry’s case, DURING it, because he can never wait. you can enjoy their freshly made Gajar Halwa (Indian carrot cake) on the house. It’s delicious.

But there is one thing that is even better, and whenever we come here we all know that we will end up getting some of this – even if we don’t actually discuss it – the pistachio kulfi (ice cream).

If you’ve never tried kulfi this is a great place to do so as it is ridiculously nice! I think it’s fair to say someone else shares this opinion.

3. India Gate

Last but not least, India Gate. This one boasts the most prominent location of the three, right in heart of the Shaftsbury shopping center.

We often see Europeans and other foreigners in here getting their fix of Indian food. They may be attracted by the cool air conditioning, and of course the location, but the food is great too. India gate is more of a South Indian restaurant and when we come here we tend to go for the banana leaf. Well, Bryn usually has a biriyani.

AND a banana leaf. If you’re familiar with banana leaf lunches in Malaysia you’ll know that you normally get 3 vegetable dishes, various curries and chutneys, and a pile of rice to soak it all up. If you need extra protein, you can go up to the counter and choose your meat.

However we normally resist doing this as we have found that the best of the banana leaf experience tends to be the vegetable curries, not to mention that the bill quickly doubles when you order individual dishes. I’m sure even Bryn would agree, unless he has just finished his workout, in which case I’ll usually allow him a bit of chicken!
