Malaysia’s Must-try Mamak Food at Nasi Kandar Padang Kota Restaurant

Looking for good quality local Indian food at a very affordable price?

There are literally countless Indian Muslim Mamak restaurants everywhere you travel in Malaysia. With so many choices, it can sometimes be difficult to choose which one to satisfy your craving for Indian food.

My strategy is to not expect too much at first and go by looking at the exterior, the facial expressions of customers already seated and eating, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant.

In other words, it is better to go without expecting much for food that you have not tried yet. So, if you try it for the first time and find it quite delicious, you will naturally come back more often and become regular customers.

This was the beginning of my discovery of ‘Padang Kota Nasi Kandar’ Indian mamak restaurant in my neighborhood, Kota Damansara, and now it’s a place I’ve become a regular.

Besides, I’ve been to this place a lot since I moved in, and this is also the place where I filmed a YouTube video about some delicious Indian restaurants, Kota Damansara neighborhood.

Most of all, the food is very tasty, the price is cheap, and the quantity is plentiful.

All of this is great, and as someone like me who loves local Indian food so much, this is a place I go to regularly.

In addition, although it is the mamak restaurant, there is free internet Wi-Fi, and also you can watch global sports broadcasts through the Sky Channel. For example, you can watch English Premier League, Cricket, Badminton, Tennis, and Grand Prix games etc.

Not to be missed, especially, is that it’s right next to Sunway Giza Mall, so it’s a great location to have an Indian dinner, shop for groceries in the shopping mall, or visit and walk around the mall’s weekend marketplace.

I am most excited just to think that I will eat my favorite food after walking or running in my neighborhood as a simple exercise.

And once on a Friday afternoon, I stumbled upon two local Chinese men living in the same neighborhood. They are Vincent and David, and they usually meet each other on Friday evenings to drink local Malaysian brandy “Kapak” or to sip on Tiger Beer and spend yum cha time. The local brandy, which costs about RM40, was the first time I tasted it that way.

A slightly dark brandy made with 37% alcohol and sweet caramel coloring and flavor. Basically that’s why David said he really likes this among other local brandys or whiskeys. In that respect, the brandy company’s strategy was successful.

The meeting place is a shared table located on the ground floor in Sunway Nexis Mall, but it is definitely a good place because the space is open and a very large fan is running on the high ceiling.

Actually, I sat down with my brother and had Chinese dim sum for an early dinner before they came to this communal table, and after my brother left, they sat down together at this table.

We spent more than 3 hours talking on a Friday evening like that. I’m not particularly a brandy fan, but I tried the local brandy Kapak. And during this corona period, we talked about our work and business ideas and exchanged phone numbers with each other.

In fact, we weren’t all hungry at all. I also ate 10 kinds of dim sum with my brother, so I was still full. However, the Covid restrictions were lifted to some extent, so it was the first day that only those who received both vaccines could sit down and eat food at the restaurant.

So, we decided on Padang Kota, the local indian restaurant that we thought was the most delicious in our neighborhood, and we decided to have a late-night snack.

deliciously flavorful tandoori chicken

The local friends who went to this restaurant with me that Friday ordered their favorite foods. Vincent ordered roti canai, and David ordered nasi lemak ayam(chicken), the national dish of Malaysia.

For me, my obsession with tandoori chicken and dosa is so obvious that I’m not really hungry late at an Indian restaurant, but I have no objections or complaints about ordering and eating tandoori chicken and dosa that late. ????????

Moreover, when it comes to Indian food, a variety of curry and meat sauces made with various spices please my eyes and mouth.

coconut and mint chutney

In particular, I love the coconut and mint chutneys here so the staff here always bring me plenty. I’m a happy customer who eats everything and asks for more because that’s not enough.

The coconut chutneys sauce here is fantastically delicious, and the dosa made from fermented gram beans and rice topped with chutney is also really good.

No matter how busy the restaurant is with customers, when I ask for a crispy dosa, it is made in the shape of a cone-shaped triangular cylinder and brought in a pretty standing shape.

Even if I forgot to ask the staff to make it crispy, they make it into a round dosa or fold it in half into a wide pancake shape and give it to me.

At this time, the outside is crispy and the inside is moist and delicious. So no matter what shape you eat it, it’s really delicious.

But the crispy, triangular-shaped dosa is crispy until I finish eating the last piece, so I can’t stop getting my hands on it.

Of course, the tandoori chicken here is so delicious. Chicken marinated in a mouth-watering spicy and red tandoori sauce is placed in a tandoori oven and baked for about 20 minutes.

So, because it is roasted in an tandoori oven, the chicken’s oil drips down, and the charred chicken always catches my eye, which is light and moist and full of the aroma of the fire.

Tandoori chicken is always served with mint sauce. The color is the bright green color of mint, but when you taste it, it is full of green pepper, onion, garlic flavor and saltiness.

First, squeeze lemon slices on top of the grilled chicken and sprinkle it with your hands to give it a fresh and citrus scent. In that way, the spicy flavor of the tandoori that touches the tip of the nose is fresher and better and stimulates the appetite even more.

For the price, the total is RM12.5 including the tandoori chicken, dosa and ice lemon drink. This is the number one restaurant I go to in my neighborhood when I think of local Indian food because I can always enjoy delicious, fresh and flavorful Indian food without disappointment.
