Chinese Yamcha Time-Foo Hing Dim Sum House (?????) Puchong Kuala Lumpur

Delicious steamed dimsum items at Foo hing

I’ve heard that Malaysian Chinese make up more than 30% of the population, but I have lived here for nearly 11 years and feel their population is more than that.

In Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, I have lived in various districts where many Chinese people live. For example, there are many areas where Chinese people live very densely, such as Cheras in the south that covers a very large area of Kuala Lumpur, Kepong in the north, and Puchong in the southwest.

Even in Petaling Jaya, where I currently live, it seems to me that there are far more Chinese than other Malay or Indian populations. The good thing is that I am very satisfied that there are many restaurants where I can enjoy a variety of delicious Chinese food with authentic taste in the neighborhood where there are many Chinese people.

What’s even better is when I look around my neighborhood, I can find quite a few Chinese restaurants with fairly cheap price tags. For example, there are Chinese-style nasi campur(mixed rice) such as economy rice restaurants in every neighborhood.

The concept here is that the customer picks up a plate of steamed rice and chooses from over 30 different side dishes of meat and vegetables they want to eat.

The price is really cheap, and it is good that a variety of side dishes, as well as Chinese tea, water, and soup are provided free of charge.

However, one of the must-try restaurants in places where many Chinese live is a dim sum restaurant. I have already blogged in my local restaurant review for “Jin Xuan”, a famous Hong Kong style dim sum restaurant chain with more than 8 branches across the Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur.

But today, I would like to tell you about a hidden gem that I personally like very much. It is a dim sum restaurant called Foo Hing and located in Puchong, the southern area of Kuala Lumpur, which has a large Chinese population.

hiking with Maria at Bukit Hitam

I have been to this dim sum restaurant in Puchong often because I used to drive to and from Kuala Lumpur when I lived in Cyberjaya. Speaking of Puchong, quite apart from the dim sum restaurant, there is a forest called shortly “Bukit Hitam (Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve Trail)” which is fairly large forests suitable for all levels of hiking, so I’ve been hiking on the weekends quite a few times. And in Puchong, I used to go to the Tesco Extra, and also occasionally repair and service my car when necessary.

Bukit Hitam is also called “Bukit Wawasan” between locals because it is located on the so-called wawasan road. While hiking, you’ll be amazed at the lush jungle-like forests of downtown Puchong.

In particular, there are so many monkeys and some several waterfalls. One thing is for sure, when I plan to go to Foo Hing restaurant to eat dim sum, dim sum and hiking are planned as a set. So, I took my co-workers from the past and went to Foo Hing to eat delicious dim sum for early breakfast and lunch, and we went hiking in the afternoon to digest food.

After completing two missions in one day, eating delicious dim sum and hiking, I remember it as a day where I felt so much better. In particular, my body and mind seemed to have been detoxed through a lot of sweat while hiking, so it was good because a refreshing mind-set was maintained for the next few days.

Going back to the delicious dim sum story, the very idea of making plans to go to Foo Hing to eat dim sum every time excites me. It is true that even thinking about what kind of dim sum to eat made my mouth water.

Stunning waterfalls

The Foo Hing restaurant opens every day at 7am and closes at 3pm. I usually arrive between 11am and 12 am and the restaurant is already full of people. So, it is not surprising that there are already many people waiting in the chairs outside.

Each time I arrive, I get a numbered plastic ticket, tell the staff in charge how many of us are, and then we either sit on the provided chairs or stand in the hall outside the restaurant and wait for our numbers to be called.

After waiting for about 20 to 30 minutes, a seat will be available, and you will enter the restaurant and be guided to a table suitable for the number of people.

As soon as you enter Foo Hing, it is divided into the outer hall on the first floor where you can’t feel the air conditioning, where round tables are placed densely, and the large hall with air conditioning when you turn to the right.

Also, if the halls on the 1st floor (ground floor) are full, go up the stairs to the 2nd floor and there is a very large clean and spacious dining room where you can dine there. When you are seated at the table, you are presented with a very thick and hard plastic dim sum menu board measuring roughly 50 centimeters in width and 30 centimeters in height.

There are prices and pictures for each dim sum, and each is numbered. Then, with a paper and pencil placed on the table, select the dim sum you want to eat from the plastic dim sum menu and mark the number of dim sum items to order on the paper.

Handing the marked paper to the staff will complete the order. Of all the dim sums, I always order steamed dim sum at most. It will take some time because it is steamed when ordered, but one dim sum basket usually comes with 3 medium to 2 large ones.

So if there are 3 or more people, we will only try one specific dim sum and order again. This would unnecessarily lengthen the turnover time for each order to arrive every time.

So, whenever possible, I prefer to order two baskets of steamed dim sum at one time. Then, a total of six dim sums are served, so it is good that each person can taste two each. For example, among steamed dim sum items, my favorites are xiao long bao, har gow, shumai, lo mai gai, and dim sum with minced pork and chives.

I’ve never left without ordering two baskets of these dim sum items. If you order 2 baskets with the same item like this, they are stacked on top of each other and placed on the table. This is to ensure that the dim sum in the basket underneath does not cool down and is filled with steam to keep it warm. ????

And the joy and excitement of eating in front of the dim sum baskets stacked on top of each other will be an important element of dim sum time that you should feel properly at a dim sum restaurant.????

One thing I’ve recently learned is that when I first went to Foo Hing Dim Sum in Puchong area, there were no other branches and this place was the only one. However, about a year ago, the second branch was opened in Subang area, which is located west of Puchong and not far from each other.

In my opinion, considering the fact that the first restaurant is always crowded with many customers every day and waiting in line for an average of 30 minutes to enjoy dim sum, the establishment of the second restaurant seems to be a very strategic move.

Another thing is so obvious that I almost forgot to mention it here, but another important thing to say about Foo Hing is that it’s not a halal restaurant because pork is the main ingredient.????

So the reality is that none of my Muslim friends can eat this delicious Hong Kong style dim sum here like me. Instead, they should go to a dim sum restaurant with chicken meat in a halal version instead of pork, which is far from authentic dim sum taste in any way.

Anyway, aside from pork ingredients, no matter what type of dim sum you order, such as steamed, stir-fried, deep-fried, pan-fried, steam rolled, baked, or porridge, most of the ingredients usually contain pork or a mixture of pork and shrimp as a filling or topping. ???????? Plus, some baked savory or sweet dim sum items for dessert contain pork lard. ????

Looking at the overall quality of dim sum, what I really like about Foo Hing is that the ingredients inside the steamed dim sum are really fresh and deliciously moist. And the amount of filling is enough to savor the taste even in one bite.

I think that the best way to enjoy dim sum is to take cute bite-sized dumplings right out of the steamer and savor them while they are still warm.
At Foo Hing, steamed dim sum can be literally enjoyed while it is still hot.

Last but not least, after trying this succulent dim sum at Foo Hing, you’ll be satisfied with both the freshness and decent quality of the shrimp and pork fillings here. That said, the shrimp filling, in particular, is moderately salty and juicy, so it has a good flavor.

Also, the dim sum skin is not dry and just right because it is not thick by mixing tapioca starch and rice flour in an appropriate ratio. And since the dim sum skin is thin and transparent, you can see the plump shrimp inside, so you can tell at a glance how delicious it will be.

Looking back on how much dim sum I personally ate, I remember that when I went to this Foo Hing dim sum restaurant, I had never cut steamed dim sum in half with chopsticks, nor had I ever eaten in two bites.

Which means I usually eat about 20 of these delicious dim sums pretty quickly because I swallow them whole with almost unbearable excitement. So, based on the three dim sums in one basket, I can say that I consume an average of 7 baskets by myself.????????

Not surprisingly, while I’m writing this story now, I am getting cravings for my favorite dim sum items; dumplings stuffed with succulent and plump shrimp like har gow and crystal dumplings. To be honest, instead of eating other types of dim sum, I can eat dozens of these alone.

Of course, steamed dim sum isn’t the only highlight here in Foo Hing. No customer leaves without eating the famous Portuguese egg tart, one of the must-have baked items in dim sum restaurants.

So, I also have to savor this cute egg tart at the end to finish my dim sum meal properly. At a dim sum restaurant, this egg tart is one of the dessert items, but you can eat it after eating a variety of savory dim sum, or you can eat it in between. It’s up to the customer anyway.

The most amazing thing about the egg tarts here is that the buttery pastry, layered on the outside, is so crispy. To be honest, I’ve eaten countless egg tarts at many bakeries, cafes, and dim sum restaurants until now, but this is the first time I have experienced eating a layer of pastry with a crunchy sound like the egg tarts here. In fact, it is so ridiculously flaky that I think there are more pastries falling under my chin than pastries I eat.

Next, the bright yellow eggy custard stuffed in the middle is really moist and soft. For my taste, the filling is moderately sweet, so it is just right. In addition, a little vanilla essence is added to the mixture of milk and egg, which are the main ingredients, so as soon as you pick up the egg tart with your hand, the sweet scent is delivered directly to your nose, which makes you more appetizing.

As with all oven recipes, the proper mixing ratio of the few ingredients will be the key to making this amazing egg tart filling and crispy pastry. However, contrary to the saying, it is not that easy, so it seems that the quality of egg tarts here can be distinguished from other egg tarts.

Foo Hing’s egg tarts are so delicious that they are undoubtedly a must-try highlight menu for all customers. So it’s not hard to see some customers come here and take out a few boxes of egg tarts. Once, a local Indian couple of mine, whom I introduced for the first time, went home with 10 egg tarts after having a dim sum meal with me.
