Charcoal Grilled Pork Buffet! US$8 SEO GUNG Korean BBQ Buffet Restaurant in Malaysia

Among the many Korean restaurants in Malaysia, it is quite impressive to me that there are many restaurants that have a meat BBQ buffet or all you can eat setting, which is my favorite style. Because of this, I often go to new Korean meat BBQ restaurants with my local Chinese friends.

The restaurant I blog today is a Korean restaurant called Seo Gung(??), located in Damansara, uptown in Petaling Jaya.

The buffet price here is RM33 per person, before tax. The good thing about this restaurant is that it uses briquettes rather than electric hotplates, so the meat is full of smoke and is delicious. And the oil from the meat also falls through the wire mesh, making it more chewy and light.

And unlike most Korean meat BBQ buffets, the other unique thing about this place is that it is not the self-service buffet we usually know. So, when a customer sits down, the restaurant’s staff brings about 8 kinds of food prepared that day on a tray.

Then, the delicious and fresh-looking side dishes are placed in a circle around the edge of the barbecue wire mesh.

Now, above all else, let’s take a look at the meats that are undeniably the highlight of the BBQ buffet.

First of all, this is a non-halal restaurant, and the main dish is pork marinated in about five different flavors, including pork belly called samgyeopsal(???) and seasoned chicken called dak-galbi(???).

As for the seasoning taste, it includes doen-jang(??, fermented soybean paste), a curry flavor, a beer flavor, and a gochujang(???, fermented red chili paste) flavor.

At the beginning, pork and chicken marinated in all five flavors are served together.

After eating all the meat, you can ask the staff for more meat seasoned to the taste of your choice. ????????

As a Korean myself, the side dishes, called banchan(??) served on the day I went were pretty good.

I guess that some of the side dishes will always be the same, and some will change depending on the availability of ingredients.

I tried all the side dishes provided and they were all delicious. In particular, slightly sweet, salty and crunchy anchovies(????), steamed egg(???), cucumber salad, healthy poached spinach(?????), mashed potato salad, blanched broccoli,

and really savory and crispy Korean buchimgae (???, ?(jeon)Korean pancakes),

plus very simple japchae (sweet potato glass noodles) was surprisingly tasty, unlike what I had initially thought in a glance.

Among them, we all had more japchae, steamed egg, and buchimgae(jeon) and anchovies.

And, as those who have eaten Korean food know, there is no doubt that we kept refilling not only kimchi, an essential part of Korean food, but also lettuce and various fresh vegetables that are not missed to Korean barbecue.

It’s funny that I still remember, but my Chinese friend’s girlfriend loved the mashed potatoes at the restaurant and refilled it several times. Lastly, the kimchi jjigae(???? kimchi stew) with pork meat was also full of flavor and quite spicy, so it was just right for my taste. Yum yum!????????

One thing I really like when eating BBQ is the spicy grilled kimchi(?? ??), which is grilled with pork meat over charcoal. The meaty oily flavoured kimchi taste is unimaginable for those who have never tried it other than fresh kimchi. So amazing!

However, one disappointment is that sesame oil and salt (???) are not provided as sauces other than ssamjang sauce(????), made with fermented soy beans (doenjang), red chili paste (gochujang).

My local Chinese friend liked to salt the barbecued meat as well as dipping the meat in sesame oil mixed with salt, so we insisted on the them. In the end, the staff brought us them separately in a small sauce bowl. ????

Last but not least, one important thing not to be missed is that the total buffet time is limited to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Because of the limited time, we were busy grilling meat and eating each other’s favorite side dishes.

We ordered more meat to eat, and refilled and ate more side dishes, so the given 90 minutes seemed to go by quickly. Throughout the meal, in general, we remember that it was not so easy to talk comfortably.

Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the price is really cheap here. The fact that you can enjoy the flavor of smoked meat by grilling this deliciously seasoned, freshly cut pork directly on a wire mesh placed on briquettes would be impossible at this price anywhere else.

And I could tell at a glance that the various fresh side dishes made at this restaurant were really tasty. And when I try them, it actually has the flavor and taste of a side dish similar to that eaten in Korea. ????

Among the various side dishes, we refilled at most twice, but especially since I ate almost all of this steamed egg on my own, I think I refilled this steamed egg alone about four times as far as I remember.

I would even go back to this place for only kimchi jjigae(???? spicy kimchi stew), crispy jeon(???, ?, Korean pancake), crispy anchovy(????), and steamed egg (???) among the side dishes.

Seo Gung Korean BBQ Restaurant

Address: 55, Jalan SS 21/1a, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

IPC Shopping Centre

Address: 2, Jalan PJU 7/2, Mutiara Damansara, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

We had an early dinner around 6pm at Seo Gung restaurant, and left for IPC to enjoy the second feast involving more comfortable talking and drinking.

In fact, given that we don’t see each other very often, we hardly miss a second session of wine, even after eating a huge amount of barbecued meat. It sounds like a bit of an excuse, but it’s true… haha!????

Even though everyone was full after the BBQ buffet, it was the perfect time to eat various seasonal fruits and egg tarts with wine at IPC. It felt good because it washed away the oil in my stomach and mouth full of meat and made it fresh again.????????????

Now as I am blogging this story, I laugh at the thought that I will soon have to repeat the BBQ and wine sessions again. Sounds like an excuse, but to me I still believe that if possible, both sessions should be done on the same day in a row!???? ????????????????

Happy eating and drinking!
