Whether traveling or living in Malaysia, it is true that anyone can enjoy a variety of Indian food at affordable prices at any time. Besides, it can be seen everywhere, and there are many places that are open 24 hours.

However, there was a day when my family were very excited to be able to enjoy authentic North Indian food in a long time rather than the usual local Mamak style Indian food.

Aside from mamak Indian muslim food, where our family chooses meat in various curry or tandoori forms, we also go to vegetarian restaurants like India-based Saravana Bhavan, which has a whopping 6 outlets in Kuala Lumpur, offering hundreds of amazingly colorful and delicious vegetable curry dishes.

thumbs up for the chapati house

One of our favorites at Saravana Bhavan, is the vegetarian thali set filled with over 10 different dishes, served with fluffy rice, chapati and pappudum. We are also happy to have the dozens of dosa and idli variations, the Indian tiffins eaten there. In particular, for my family, the cost-effectiveness is really good because we can eat unlimited refills of various chutney and dal curry that we love the aroma and taste of coconut and cream base, which are essential for South Indian food.

delicious chapati time for thee of us

For this reason, it seems that we don’t have many opportunities to eat North Indian food, unlike Mamak or vegetarian food. Fortunately, after a long time, we went to a North Indian restaurant located less than a 5-minute walk from Kuala Central Station.

That is the place I’m blogging today is “Sentral Chapati House”, a small restaurant where you can eat cheap and delicious North Indian food.

In fact, when it comes to North Indian food, you may think of various types of meat skewers and meat curry dishes eaten with bread such as chapati and naan. We also like North Indian food for that reason. If we can eat delicious chapati together, it can’t get any better than that. That’s right. ?

inside the Sentral chapati house restaurant

As the name “Sentral chappati house” suggests, their famous chapati is seen made to order. So it is very fresh, soft and super light. So here, the chapati is simply delicious that I can eat two or three by myself.

It was indeed the second time myself while my husband and my little son followed me for the first time. At the beginning, my husband was like,… with his face full of doubt at the shabby and unorganized appearance of the restaurant. Even if it looks shabby, wouldn’t it be better if the food in the restaurant tastes good?

Standing facing the entrance, on the right is tandoori chicken marinated in red and orange tandoori masala spices. The breast and thigh meat are stacked on a very long iron skewer and placed vertically on a glass window. We can see three skewers with two pieces of chicken skewered.

paratha in the making

And right next to that tandoori chicken is a very large tandoori oven, about the height of an adult waist.

And right in the middle, a friendly female staff keeps making chapati with her bare hands. She rolls the chapati dough into thin rolls, puts it on a hot plate, and flips it back and forth until light brown.

delicious fillings for paratha

Also, when some customers order paratha, she make it next to the chapati. Paratha is a flat-fried bread, basically a thick chapati or roti stuffed with mashed masala-flavored potatoes or cheese, or sometimes used as a filling for mashed cauliflower or spinach.

And on the left side of the entrance, there are many delicious and hot curry dishes made that day. Ideally, the best time to go is between noon and 2pm. At lunchtime, the curry dishes are freshly prepared and served to customers, so whatever it is, it looks delicious.

lots of delicious looking curries

There were less than 10 food items on display when we visited. They include fried white cabbage, fried bitter gourd coated in masala, dal made with lentils, palak curry with spinach, and channa masala with chickpeas, also keema made with minced beef or mutton.

But I think there will be more dishes coming out of the kitchen. Also, fried sweets such as samosas, fried masala lentil fritter and pakora are on the shelves.

We went straight into the hall and took a seat at a table below about the middle of the hall with a fan hanging from the ceiling. In fact, the menu was posted on the wall, but we looked closely at the menu board on the table.

So we chose chicken palak (mixed spinach chicken) for rm 16 (US$ 3.5) as a main meat dish and dal makhani for rm 12 (US$ 2.5) as a side dish. It can be seen as a typical dish full of spice flavor that cannot be missed in Indian food.

super rich dal makhani

One thing is that we only ordered two chapati along with the two hot curry dishes. Is two chapati enough for three of us? Of course not! The reason for ordering just two chapati is that we don’t want the chapati to cool down while we are eating it. I know it’s made fresh to order, so it doesn’t matter if it cools a bit, but my husband is strangely obsessed with this point.

chicken palak

In his opinion, imagine if you order a large amount of chapati at one time, it will cool down quickly and lose its soft texture, which won’t taste good. That’s why we prefer to order more chapati after basically eating two at a time. And with two chapati, it is great that my husband can enjoy one by himself, and my son and I can share one. Yum yum!

my little one enjoying the fluffy chapati a lot

As in other places, here, a spoonful of yellow dal curry(lentils) made that day is served on a round stainless steel tray along with chapati. As soon as two chapati come out at once, dip them in chicken masala curry, or wrap the chicken in a very warm and soft chapati and eat it in a mouthful. There is no better place to eat than this. ??

In the end, we consumed a total of six chapati that day, in a short 30-minute period, with two rich and flavorful curry dishes and dal. To surprise, the total price of these two dishes and six chapati is about RM36, which is roughly about 8 USD. ?

If you are a big fan of North Indian food, you will be surprised that you can enjoy such delicious food at such an affordable price. We will be going back here again soon.
