When you think of tropical fruits in Southeast Asia, mango, banana, papaya, and pineapple are the fruits that immediately come to mind. But among them, jackfruit is not to be missed. In fact, it is the heaviest fruits that grow on trees. So, jackfruit sold in the market usually weighs at least 10 kilos or more. It is a really sweet, crunchy and soft fruit.

The outside of the fruit is green and bumpy, almost reminiscent of reptile skin. If you cut it with a knife and look inside you will find that it is packed full with ripe yellow kernels arranged in rings around the centre. Each contains sweet, succulent pulp that surrounds a seed slightly larger than a chestnut.

It is not so easy to take out edible fruit from the sticky flesh of the fruit because of how tightly it is embedded inside. Already, the knife and the hand stick to each other due to the sticky bond-like glue and do not fall apart.

Anyway, just looking at the inside of the jackfruit fruit is as beautiful as art and really coveted. Speaking of this fruity scent, a subtle citrus scent mixed with sweet peach and strawberry scents that really stimulates the tip of the nose spreads everywhere.

Usually, if you go to a traditional market, you can see vendors cutting tens of kilos of jackfruit as shown in the video above. And, jackfruit is priced by weight, including the weight of the fruit’s skins.

They are usually sold at wholesale prices, so you can buy them for around RM4.5~ RM5 per kilo. In other words, if you buy a whole 10-kilogram jackfruit, the price will be around RM50(US $ 12). Of course, you have to buy including the weight of the thick and rough skins, so if you cut the fruit and get the edible part, more than half of the 10 kilos will be left as trash.

In particular, jackfruit seeds are large and heavy, so there are not many edible parts after the seeds taken from the edible parts. Luckily, the jackfruit seeds can be boiled, fried, or cooked, so if you want to invest the time to eat the seeds, get them boil, and enjoy eating them healthily.

In fact, even if you buy whole fruit at a cheap wholesale price, more than half of the fruit is inedible, and it is not easy to cut the fruit yourself with a sharp knife and take out only the edible fruit flesh.

The bare hands and sharp knife are completely covered with the super-strong natural glue that Jackfruit spits out in an instant. Consider the pain of having to remove that glue from your hands and knives for almost a few days.
So, it might be a good idea to buy jackfruit, which is sold at around 400g ~ 500g in a transparent plastic container in most commercial markets, so you can eat it right away.

Also, going to the local market during busy hours and buying at wholesale prices is not something anyone can do. Without a big heart, buying dozens of kilos, sitting on the floor at home, and cutting the fruit yourself with a sharp knife is almost impossible.
You will definitely need a professional work ethic on a hospital operating table, or a noble mind to prepare food sacrificed to the gods.

So, the price of Jackfruit in a transparent container in the supermarket saves a lot of work and time, so about RM7 (about $1.7 USD) can be considered quite cheap.

I bought around 1 kilo of jackfruit prepared at the traditional market and had it all while walking around. And then, when I went to the supermarket, I bought a sweetly ripe jackfruit, ate half of it right away, and made an egg omelette with the rest. To make an omelette, you only need 2 eggs and some jackfruit.
